A rollover is exactly as it sounds.  It is an accident in which a motor vehicle turns over, propelled by violent force.  The structural integrity of the vehicle and safety of the occupants can become compromised when a rollover accident occurs, and the causes for these accidents can vary from case to case.

Causes of Roll of Accidents and Injuries on the NJ Roadways

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association collects and compiles data related to all crashes for the purpose of better understanding what happens on the roadways and how accidents can be avoided.  Further, NHTSA reports that there are various factors that contribute to rollover accidents, some of which include:

  • Speed: NHTSA found that 40% of all rollover crashes involve high rates of speed or speed in excess of the posted limit. Among those rollovers that involved fatalities, 75% involved rates of speed 55 miles per hour or higher;
  • Alcohol: Unfortunately, many of the fatal rollovers would not have happened had alcohol not been involved.  Almost 50% of all fatal rollovers involved some level of alcohol ingestion.  While not all rollovers involved a BAC above the legal limit, it remains clear that any amount of alcohol contributes to driver impairment and crashes.
  • Location: The location of the accident appears to be a contributing factor when it comes to rollovers.  Approximately three-quarters of all rollovers involve winding rural roads. It is logical to assume that speeding around a sharp curve can lead to a rollover crash.
  • Routine driving: Almost all rollover crashes involve routine driving. This means driving that is not out of the ordinary such as making a turn, going straight, or rounding a curve. Because 90% of all rollovers occur through routine driving, it is reasonable to assume that other factors play a role in causing the majority of these accidents.

Types of Roll Over Accidents in Monmouth and Ocean Counties

In addition to various causes of rollovers, there are many different types of rollover crashes.  The different types of rollover accidents include:

  • Tripped rollovers: Tripped rollovers happen when a vehicle is on the roadway, slides sideways, and hits a curb, guardrail, or soft soil that causes the tires to be pushed one way and the vehicle the other.
  • Un-tripped rollovers: Un-tripped rollovers happen in cases involving top-heavy vehicles that are traveling at high rates of speed or swerving to avoid hitting an object.  The car may be seeking to avoid another car, animal, or any other object.  In trying to avoid the object, the heavy car tips over and often careens down a hill, slope, or into another lane of travel.

Injuries from Rollover Auto Accidents on NJ Highways

In every rollover accident, regardless of the type, there is bound to be some type of injury.  Unfortunately, many rollover accidents can cause severe trauma to the body.  Often, the body is no match for the violent force involved in a rollover crash.  Injuries are usually sustained to either the abdomen, chest, back, head and neck, upper or lower limbs.

Some of the more common injuries associated with rollovers are:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Bruising, disfigurement, or scarring

Many of these injuries have long term effects that have a detrimental impact on your quality of life. These lasting impacts can include loss of control of brain function (memory, speech, frontal lobe damage), vision loss, loss of bodily function, quality of life issues, emotional instability, economic losses, and depression.
