50-year-old Eugene M. LaVergne, a former attorney, faced criminal charges for allegedly stealing approximately $108,000 of the $200,000 escrow that was placed in his attorney trust account pending the resolution of an estate in litigation in Freehold. He is said to have made 130 withdrawals between July of 2009 and November of 2010 and using the funds for personal expenses.
After being convicted of second-degree misapplication of entrusted property, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-15, as well as fourth-degree contempt of court, he was just sentenced to a 7-year New Jersey State Prison term. LaVergne’s license to practice law has also been permanently revoked as a result of these crimes.
