Three people sustained significant physical injuries in a car accident on Route 9 in Howell Township, New Jersey.
The motor vehicle accident went down around 11:25 a.m. on the highway near the Lakewood border. The driver of a 2005 Toyota Camry, a 31-year-old man from Lakewood NJ, was traveling north on Route 9 and suddenly swerved into the opposite lane of traffic. The Toyota Camry ultimately collided with a dump truck on Route 9.
Howell Township NJ police conducted an investigation into the car crash and determined that the driver of the Camry swerved into oncoming traffic because a vehicle in front of him had stopped in the roadway while waiting to make a left turn onto another road.
The head-on collision between the Camry and the dump truck occurred in the southbound lane of the highway.
The driver of the Camry was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune NJ, where doctors treated him for serious injuries. He was later listed in critical condition.
Another person who suffered injuries in the motor vehicle accident was a passenger in the Camry. He was also treated at the hospital and was later listed in stable condition.
The driver of the truck involved in the truck accident is a 29-year-old Bayville NJ man. He suffered minor injuries in the vehicle collision and was treated at Ocean Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey.
Meanwhile, the scene on the highway was chaotic as multiple law enforcement agencies were at the scene, including the NJ State Police, the Howell Township Police Department, The Lakewood Police Department, the Howell Township Office of Emergency Management, Howell Township First Aid, and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Analysis Response Team. Route 9 needed to be shut down for approximately three hours after the accident while law enforcement, including officers with the Howell Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, conducted an investigation and worked to clear debris from the highway. At this time, Howell NJ police have not issued any traffic citations to the driver of the Camry.
Regardless of whether the driver is ultimately cited for a moving violation, it remains possible that he will be subject to a civil lawsuit for negligently or recklessly causing the car accident. Depending on the circumstances leading up to the motor vehicle collision, the passenger in the Camry and the driver of the truck could potentially seek compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages.
