A Neptune City NJ man sustained serious injuries while riding his bicycle in Avon-by-the-Sea, a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
According to authorities, the bike accident occurred on Main Street in Avon-by-the-Sea a short time after 2:00 p.m. The victim was riding his bike on the street and headed in the direction of Belmar when he was struck by a car door being opened by a woman who had parked her vehicle on the side of the roadway so that she could run into the nearby Macaron Shop.
The force of the door clipping the victim’s bicycle caused him to fall off the bike and crash to the ground. When the victim hit the pavement, he suffered a head injury as his head slammed into the pavement. At this time, it is unclear if the victim was wearing a helmet or other protective gear when the accident occurred.
After the collision, the motorist dialed 911 and called for emergency medical responders. The Avon-by-the-Sea Police Department dispatched police officers and an ambulance to the scene of the accident.
The 21-year-old victim, who lives in Neptune, NJ, was subsequently rushed to the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, where doctors treated him in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital. He was later listed in stable condition, according to Avon-by-the-Sea police.
Meanwhile, law enforcement investigated the accident and spoke with the 75-year-old owner of the car. At this time, the driver, who is from Loch Arbour, NJ, has not been cited for any traffic violations or charged with any crimes.
However, depending on the circumstances of the bike accident, it is possible that the victim could file a personal injury lawsuit against the vehicle owner and seek monetary damages against her for causing his injuries.
