The serious car accident occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m. The victim, an 82-year-old man who lives in Freehold, was attempting to walk across Route 9, near South Street, when a car hit him. The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year old woman from Jackson, New Jersey, was traveling north on the highway at the time of the accident.
The force of the collision caused the pedestrian to slam into the vehicle’s windshield. The victim then fell to the pavement and remained there until emergency responders arrived at the scene to offer assistance.
Afterward, the injured pedestrian was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune NJ. Once the victim arrived at the hospital, doctors treated him for his injuries, which included significant head trauma. He was later listed in critical condition. At this time, officials have not provided any further updates on his health status.
A Freehold Township patrolman who is leading the investigation into the accident said that the victim was not walking within a crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle.
At this time, no criminal charges have been filed against the driver, nor has the driver been cited for any traffic violations such as speeding or reckless driving.
Depending on the circumstances of the accident, it is possible that the victim will be able to file a personal injury lawsuit in order to get compensated for his injuries and subsequent medical treatment and rehabilitation costs.
