Officials from the New Jersey State Police have requested the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who allegedly stole an envelope full of cash at a coffee shop located at a rest stop on the Garden State Parkway.
Police say the man was documented on surveillance cameras as he picked up an envelope containing $1,260, which was on the floor of a coffee shop at the Forked River Service Area on the Garden State Parkway. The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:11 a.m on Saturday, April 18th, is under active investigation.
The money was reportedly in a bank envelope, clearly not belonging to the suspect, who has been described as a white, bald, heavier man with facial hair. As authorities continue to pursue this investigation, they have asked that any and all information pertaining to the incident or the suspect be forwarded to the Bass River Police Station at (732) 441-4500 ext. 5916.
If the suspect is ultimately identified, he may be facing serious theft charges. In New Jersey, theft offenses involving amounts ranging from $500 to $75,000 are classified as third-degree crimes, which are punishable by a term of incarceration ranging from 3 to 5 years in New Jersey State Prison. Notably, third-degree crimes entail a presumption of non-incarceration, meaning that first-time offenders may be afforded probation or a diversionary program such as Pre-trial Intervention as an alternative to conviction.
