Neptune Car Accident Prompts Search for Driver

Neptune police officers are currently investigating a recent car accident involving a driver who crashed into a guardrail and subsequently fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind.

According to Lieutenant Scott Cox of the Neptune Police Department, officers arrived at the scene of the accident on Route 18 at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 1^st. Police found one vehicle that appeared to have crashed into the guardrail and do not believe that there was another vehicle involved in the accident. There were no occupants in the vehicle, nor in the vicinity when they arrived.

The K-9 unit of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department conducted an extensive search to locate the occupants of the vehicle, but authorities have yet to find them. The identity of the car’s owner also remains undisclosed; however, if police identify and locate the person responsible for the crash, he or she may be facing charges such as reckless driving, careless driving, or leaving the scene of an accident.

In New Jersey, traffic violations for reckless driving can result in serious penalties, including up to 60 days in the county jail, a maximum fine of $200.00, the addition of five points on the defendant’s driver’s license, and even a period of driver’s license suspension in some cases. It is also important to note that the accumulation of points on one’s driver’s license can lead to collateral consequences like increases in insurance premiums.
