Officials believe that 24-year-old Eatontown resident Jamaar L. Jefferson was involved in a car accident in the vicinity of the Presbyterian Church on the Hill on Cold Indian Springs Road in Ocean Township.
Jefferson allegedly crashed his vehicle into a wall, sustaining a minor head injury, and then fled the scene. He was taken into custody and transferred to a local hospital for treatment shortly thereafter.
Jefferson has yet to be charged in connection with the aforementioned incident, but he may face serious charges including leaving the scene of an accident. In New Jersey, “leaving the scene” can be qualified as a motor vehicle infraction or a criminal offense, depending on the circumstances of the specific case.
The penalties associated with a motor vehicle violation for leaving the scene of an accident can vary significantly based on the damage resulting from the accident. Generally, first offenses for leaving the scene of an accident that result solely in property damage are punishable by a fine ranging from $200.00 to $400.00, a license suspension of 6 months, a sentence to serve up to 30 days in the jail of the county in which the offense occurred, and 2 New Jersey Motor Vehicle points on your driver’s license.
