According to U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman, 26-year-old James Paroline was taken into custody on Tuesday, July 7th and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Investigators reportedly discovered multiple instances, specifically on March 1st and March 2nd, during which Paroline downloaded illicit images of child sexual abuse on his home computer.
Tracking the IP address of Paroline’s computer led law enforcement officials to his Red Bank residence, at which time they discovered child pornography in photo and video form. He is being detained pending a bail hearing to be held on Thursday and is now facing a host of severe penalties.
Under New Jersey’s “endangering” statute, which is found in N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4, each count for second degree endangering the welfare of a child is punishable by a prison term ranging from 5 to 10 years. As such, Paroline could be sentenced to a maximum 20-year term of incarceration if he is ultimately found guilty in this case.
In addition, he is exposed to collateral consequences such as mandatory sex offender registration under New Jersey’s Megan’s Law, as well as community supervision for life. Further, a conviction would also preclude him from serving in any capacity involving children for the remainder of his life.
