According to New Jersey State Police Sergeant First Class Gregory Williams, law enforcement officials received a report of an altercation at a residence located on Deer Trail Drive in Millstone Township shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7th. Police said that the initial report was unclear, vaguely described as a house party and some type of argument.
After arriving on the scene, officers discovered that two men had been stabbed, both of whom were subsequently transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune where they received treatment for their injuries. As of the most recent reports, both victims are expected to recover.
The investigation of this incident is ongoing and no arrests have been made as of yet. However, if a suspect is ultimately arrested, he or she may face charges ranging from aggravated assault to attempted murder. Under New Jersey law, an aggravated assault charge may be levied if a defendant “Attempts to cause or purposely or knowingly causes bodily injury to another with a deadly weapon.” Clearly, this charge may be applicable in the above case.
On the other hand, an aggravated assault charge may be elevated to attempted murder if the State believes that it has sufficient evidence to support this charge in court. It is notoriously difficult to prove, however, because it requires the element of “intent.” If a person is convicted of attempted murder, he or she is exposed to a term of incarceration ranging from 10 to 20 years.
