Alleged Shoplifting Incident in Freehold Results in Arrests of 2 Wanted Women

Two women were recently arrested in Freehold Township after allegedly shoplifting thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from a local Walmart. Subsequent background checks conducted by the police revealed that both women had outstanding warrants for their arrests.

According to a report issued by the Freehold Township Police Department, officers arrested 31-year-old Naishauna Smith-Wilson and 21-year-old Dora Lewis, both of Bordentown, on Thursday, January 15th. The women are accused of stealing merchandise valued at $1,551.47 from a Freehold Walmart.

Both women were arrested and charged with shoplifting, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11. After running background checks on both of the women, authorities discovered that Lewis was, in fact, a fugitive from justice out of Pennsylvania and that Smith-Wilson also has a number of outstanding warrants for her arrest.

Lewis and Smith-Wilson were then transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Facility, at which time Lewis was being held on $105,000 bail without a 10% option and Smith-Wilson was being held in lieu of bail amounting to $5,000 with no 10% option. According to law enforcement officials, Lewis’s bail is significantly higher than her alleged accomplice’s due to the charge associated with being a fugitive from justice.

With regard to the shoplifting charges against both women, these offenses vary in terms of severity, with the degree of the charges contingent upon the value of the alleged stolen property. In this case, the defendants have likely been charged with third-degree crimes, which are filed in cases involving the theft of merchandise valued between $500 and $75,000.

Not only does this mean that they may be sentenced to serve between 3 and 5 years in New Jersey State Prison if convicted, but they will also be required to perform community service.

Clearly Lewis and Smith-Wilson may be subject to significant consequences if they are found guilty of the charges that arose from the recent alleged shoplifting incident. However, the additional penalties associated with the outstanding charges against them may drastically increase the punishments imposed by the State.
