New Snow And Ice Law!

November 22, 2014

A new motor vehicle offense has been created: operating a motor vehicle with accumulated snow or ice on the vehicle. All areas of the vehicle are covered, including the windows, windshield, hood and trunk.

Police are now authorized to stop cars with ice and snow while driving on a street or highway when he or she determines that the car presents a danger to persons or property. It is a non-point violation with a daily fine of $25.oo – $75.00. The offense is part of a series of amendments to NJSA 39:4-077.1.

It is unclear how much snow or ice would constitute a danger to persons or property, so always clear the surface of your car of ice and snow, including the roof!
