Authorities are currently investigating a recent stabbing that resulted in the death of a young man in Asbury Park.
Acting Chief Anthony Salerno of the Asbury Park Police Department announced that the incident occurred on the 400 block of Ridge Avenue on Monday, January 5th. The victim, a 19-year-old man, was reportedly transported to Neptune’s Jersey Shore University Medical Center after the stabbing. He died shortly thereafter.
Officials have yet to disclose the identity of the victim, as they first need to notify the man’s family. The Asbury Park Police Department and Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office have launched a coordinated investigation seeking a suspect in connection with this case.
If a suspect is ultimately identified and apprehended, he or she may be charged with murder, also known as criminal homicide. Under New Jersey law, homicide is classified as a first degree felony; however, these crimes entail extended sentencing terms due to the egregiousness of the offenses.
Specifically, first degree crimes are generally punishable by term of incarceration ranging from 10 to 20 years in NJ State Prison. However, a person convicted of murder is subject to a sentence of 30 years to life, with a minimum 30-year period of parole ineligibility.
